The List of Paintings on the website

The List of Paintings on this website is presented as a Microsoft Excel© Spreadsheet with four sheets, which can be downloaded from the download section of this website: from File Downloads .

The list provides about 50,000 titles of paintings with the title of the painting, the name of the painter and the museum in which the painting can be found. The list contains also classification codes for the contents of the picture. The list is continuously updated with more paintings, and with paintings of more themes. Further versions will be published.

The classifications in the spreadsheet allow finding more paintings for a certain theme than indicated in the texts on particular Christian religious themes, as presented on this website.

The spreadsheet allows also finding the museum of a certain painting, as well as the important paintings that can be found in a certain museum. One can find all the paintings in the list for a particular painter, and so on. The spreadsheet format is well suited for such searches.

The following text provides a short explanation of the contents of the columns of the sheets of the spreadsheet.

Sheet 1:

Column 1: Code

The Code provides a first classification of the paintings. The Code is detailed in sheet 2. This code is also called the prime code.

Column 2: Title

The Title of the painting.

Column 3: Painter

The full name of the painter.

Column 4: Dates

The birth-date and death-date of the painter or the dates between which the painter was active.

Column 5: Painting Date

The date of the painting.

Column 6: Museum

The code of the museum in which the painting can be found. The museum code is detailed in sheet 3.

Column 7: Saint

When the painting is about a saint, an apostle or a holy father, one can find here the name of the apostle or saint. These names refer to the list that can be found in the book ‘Classification of Christian religious Themes in European Painting’, published equally on the website.

Column 8: Religious Themes Code

This code refers to the macro-themes detailed in the book ‘Classification of Christian religious Themes in European Painting’, published equally on the website. The code is detailed in sheet 4 of the spreadsheet.

Column 9: Other Themes Code

This code refers to other subjects than religious themes. The meaning of the code is given equally in sheet 4 (at the end). This code will be gradually added with more classifications in further versions. The code provides for themes of mythology, and of ancient history (themes with prime code MY or CH) the code of the macro theme; the micro theme for these classes is provided in the next column (column 10). For allegorical themes (themes with AL as prime code) they represent the code of the micro theme.

Column 10: Secondary Code

For themes of mythology and of ancient history (prime codes MY and CH) this column contains the code of the micro theme.

Column 11: Female Painter

When 'Female' is mentioned in this column, the painter is a female painter. Elsewhere on the website 'www.theartofpainting.be', the list of female painters and their work is presented separately.
